It’s Been a Tough Year, and Yet…
Any way you look at it, 2020 has been a difficult year.
With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s time to pause and take stock of our blessings. But if you’re still reeling from 10 months of pandemic, politics, shutdowns, lockdowns, downturns and upheaval, you may need a little help.
Here are a few ideas:
#1. You can read this.
Even 20 years into the 21st century, 17% of the world’s adult population remains illiterate. Think of how lost you’d be if you were unable to read, and be grateful for this amazing capability.
#2. You have family and friends who love you.
They may drive you crazy and you may butt heads on political issues, but your family loves you. Despite your quirks. Your friends, on the other hand, often love you because of them. Be thankful for both.
#3. You have access to clean water.
More than two billion people on the planet lack access to safe drinking water.
Most Americans, on the other hand, don’t give it a second thought.
We turn on the tap, and it’s there. Be grateful.
#4. You can eat when you’re hungry.
Most of us enjoy the luxury of well-stocked refrigerators and pantries every day of the year. Let’s be extra thankful for this bounty.
#5. You have the world at your fingertips.
Have a question about anything? Virtually all of us in this country have immediate access to almost unlimited information via the internet. Be thankful, but use responsibly.
#6. You’ve experienced pain.
Yes, be grateful for the pain you’ve felt in your life. Not only does pain make us stronger, it helps us to develop compassion. So it really makes us better people.
#7. You’re able to be thankful.
Practicing gratitude not only improves your mood and overall health, it can add up to ten years to your life expectancy. So breathe deeply, savor your life, and be grateful for being grateful.
