“MAMA SAID” – The Shirelles
“Mama said there’ll be days like this, there’ll be days like this, my mama said.”
Sixties girl group The Shirells released “Mama Said”‘ early in the decade. The time-honored lyrics admit that, when it comes to life’s toughest moments, you-know-who still knows best.
“YOU CAN’T HURRY LOVE” – The Supremes
“I remember Mama said / You can’t hurry love /
No you just have to wait /
She said love don’t come easy /
It’s a game of give and take.”
Mama also doled out love advise in this classic hit by The Supremes that topped the charts in 1966.
Sixteen years later, the Phil Collins version made the Top 20, proving that maternal guidance never goes out of style.
“MAMA TOLD ME NOT TO COME” – Three Dog Night
“Mama told me not to come / She said, that’s not the way to have fun, son /
That’s not the way to have fun.”
In this classic lament by Three Dog Night, released in 1970, a young man suffers the consequences of failing to heed his mother’s advice.
“MOTHER AND CHILD REUNION” – Paul Simon
“No I would not give you false hope /
On this strange and mournful day /
But the mother and child reunion /
Is only a motion away.”
Paul Simon’s 1972 hit reflects the loss of a mother, offering comfort along with the faith that someday they’ll meet again.
“COAT OF MANY COLORS” – Dolly Parton
“Momma sewed the rags together / Sewin’ every piece with love /
She made my coat of many colors that I was so proud of.”
Country music fans will recall this Mother’s Day tearjerker from 1971. The song describes how Parton’s mother stitched together a coat for her from rags given to the poverty-stricken family. As she sewed, she told Dolly about the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors.
“MAMA LIKED THE ROSES” – Elvis Presley
“Oh, mama liked the roses / But most of all she cared /
About the way we learned to live / And if we said our prayers.”
The King of Rock and Roll was known for his devotion to his mother, as evidenced by this sentimental song recorded in 1969.
