The pandemic may have changed the way we work, but it hasn’t changed what makes us happy in our job.

According to research conducted by U.S. News & World Report, PayScale, and CareerBliss, financial reward is not necessarily a key indicator of job satisfaction. Rather, the most satisfying jobs provide a clear sense of purpose as well as a sense of belonging.

Here are a few of the career choices that consistently rank at the top of the list:

Clergy

Despite the long hours and modest salaries, clergy are very satisfied with their career choice. They regard their occupation as a “calling,” where they can help people during life’s most intense moments.

Most clergy find meaning and fulfillment in their day-to-day tasks, irrespective of religious affiliation.

Chief Executive

Regardless of the industry or the size of the company, chief executives have a lot of responsibilities. But they also set the tone for the rest of the company. Since having pride in one’s organization is a primary driver of overall happiness, it’s not surprising that CEOs would experience a high level of job satisfaction.

Feeling appreciated and respected are two more indicators, which most CEOs also enjoy. It’s good to be the boss.

Conservation Scientist

Charged with managing and maintaining wilderness areas and wildlife habitats, conservation scientists and foresters report high levels of job satisfaction. In addition to spending significant time in nature (which itself is therapeutic), foresters often report a sense of fulfillment in knowing they are protecting and conserving natural resources.

Firefighter

Firefighter crews build a strong sense of camaraderie in a field where working as a team is paramount. Few individuals in our society are as respected and appreciated as these brave heroes who routinely save lives and property.
