Love and Debt

Bad Credit Can Be
a Romantic Roadblock

Would you marry someone with high debt or bad credit? Would you break up with someone who has reckless spending habits?

According to a 2021 survey by WalletHub, a personal finance website, 47% of all respondents — and 56% of female respondents — would not marry someone who has bad credit. (Forty-four percent of women would not even date someone with bad credit.)

Here are a few more romantic insights revealed by the survey:

Biggest Turnoffs

Forty-four percent of the people surveyed said irresponsible spending is a bigger turnoff than bad breath.

And even more (47%) said they’d break up with their Significant Other if he or she demonstrated reckless spending habits. A slim majority of respondents (52%) believe financial infidelity can be worse than cheating.

According to the survey, the worst types of money problems a relationship can face are:

  • Financial secrets (34%)
  • Irresponsible spending (28%)
  • High debt level (14%)
  • Failure to save for the future (11%)
  • Ruining the other person’s credit score (9%)

Be My Valentine

Love and DebtWould you incur credit card debt for a Valentine’s Day gift? About twice as many men as women said they would. In fact, 89% of women surveyed said they absolutely would not!

Most of the respondents (both male and female) expected to spend between $50 and $100 on their Valentine (34%), while only slightly fewer (31%) planned on spending less than $50. Only 7% intended to spend more than $100.

And almost a third of the respondents (28%) planned to spend nothing at all. But, apparently, that’s okay – at least, according to the previous year’s survey:  86% believe love is more important that money.
