Flowers Weren’t Enough
for These Historical Figures
Some of history’s biggest names went above and beyond to demonstrate devotion to their mothers. Here are four of the most notable examples.
Constantine and Helena
Roman Emperor Constantine (who reigned from 306 to 337 A.D.) shared a particularly close relationship with his mother, Helena, upon whom he showered land, title and wealth.
He also erected numerous statues in her honor, and issued coins bearing her name and portrait After her death in 330 A.D., the dutiful son renamed three separate cities as Helenopolis — one in Asia Minor, one in Palestine and one in Lydia.
Brahms’ “German Requiem”
Renowned composer Johannes Brahms was inspired to write “German Requiem” – his symphonic masterpiece about love, loss, and comfort – at the age of 32, following the death of his mother, Johanna, in 1865.
Written in three stages over a period of 14 years, “Requiem” evokes images of death and grief, but also joy and light. It’s regarded as one of Brahms’ defining works, and is a fitting tribute to a loving parent.
Whistler and His Mother
In 1864, American-born painter James Whistler was living a riotous, Bohemian lifestyle when his very pious mother, Anna, came to live with him in London. James kicked his girlfriend out of his flat and quickly reverted to the role of faithful son.
For her part, Anna was James’ biggest fan, and supported him by being his model, his caretaker, and (occasionally) his agent.
Today, the tributary portrait known as “Whistler’s Mother” is recognized worldwide as an icon of maternal devotion and steadfastness.
“Let It Be”
In 1968, the Beatles were on the verge of disbanding. A stressed-out Paul McCartney dreamed that his deceased mother, Mary, appeared to him and gently reassured him. “Let it be,” she said.
McCartney sat down at the piano the next day and composed one of the Beatles’ biggest hits.
Others believe the song refers to the Virgin Mary, and Sir Paul has stated that he welcomes all interpretations.
Over the years, McCartney’s devotion to his mother has not waned. When asked several years ago what he’d do with a time machine, he replied, “Go back and spend time with my mum.”
