10 Ways to Honor a U.S. Veteran
In a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, a young American naval officer failed to properly bow to his captors.
The consequences were swift and merciless — a violent and brutal beating. When it was clear the blows would not let up until the young man was dead, Lt. Richard Nott Antrim stepped in.
“Enough!!” he cried. “I’ll take the rest!”
The Highest Degree of Brotherhood
The Japanese were so stunned that Lt. Antrim had to repeat his offer: “If there is to be 50 lashes, I will take the rest of them for him.”
The punishment ended, and the young officer’s broken body was gently restored. All because Lt. Antrim cared enough to sacrifice himself and display the highest degree of brotherhood… unconditional love.. He became the inspiration for the hopeless prisoners who struggled for three years to survive a living hell.
For his outstanding gallantry during WWII, Richard Nott Antrim was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He continued to serve in the armed forces, retiring in 1954 as a rear admiral. Through it all, Antrim never sought recognition, only the opportunity to serve others.
