Labor Day

Who’s Ready for a Road Trip?

Every year, summer seems to slip away a little more quickly than the year before.

Labor Day is summer’s last hurrah, so why not take advantage of the three-day weekend to drive someplace new? Here are four suggestions within easy driving distance of eastern Pennsylvania:

Back to the Beach!

Nothing extends summer better than one more trip to the beach. And Cape May, New Jersey, fits the bill nicely. Known for its Victorian architecture, Cape May offers miles of coastline, a picturesque lighthouse, and plenty of quaint shopping.

You can combine history with beachcombing when you stay at America’s oldest seaside resort, Congress Hall. First constructed in 1816, this historic hotel was known as “the summer White House” for several U.S. presidents.

The resort regularly hosts a plethora of activities such as bike tours, archery, yoga on the beach, birding, and more.

The Boys of Summer

If you’re a baseball fan, Labor Day is a great time to visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The crowds have thinned, the weather is milder, and hotel rates are lower.

Once you’ve had your fill of America’s national pastime, check out area apple orchards and the sandy beaches of Otsego Lake. There you can stay at the luxurious Otesaga Resort Hotel, a member of the prestigious Historic Hotels of America, spanning 700 feet of waterfront property.

The resort offers boating, golfing, biking and tennis – and it’s just an eight-minute walk to Cooperstown.

Amazing Grace

For a relaxing end-of-summer escape offering ideal temperatures, consider the charming waterfront town of Havre de Grace, Maryland. In addition to the many boutiques, restaurants, and inns that line its quiet streets, the town is also home to Concord Point Light, the oldest publicly accessible lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay.

Havre de Grace is situated at the mouth of the Susquehanna River, where the river meets the upper Chesapeake, making it ideal for a riverboat tour that provides delightful views of the town, nearby shorelines, and Garrett Island (a National Wildlife Refuge).

Eden Mill Nature Center offers guided two-hour canoe trips along Deer Creek, designated as one of Maryland’s most scenic rivers. Book a stay at the historic Vandiver Inn, an expansive Victorian mansion built in 1886 by former town mayor Murray Vandiver.

In Our Own Backyard

Just west of the Poconos in northeastern PA sits picturesque Lackawanna County. Here you can tour an 1860 coal mine and ride a trolley through the mountains.

The Montage Mountain Resort near Scranton is a popular ski resort in the winter months, but during the summer it offers a zipline, miniature golf course, and extensive outdoor waterpark (open through Monday, September 4).
